We all have that great Super Bowl team in mind. It’s the squad that we remember dominating the league and winning the biggest game with ease. Some teams are just better than others, there is no way around that. Occasionally, a team of fate will come in and pull an upset, but for the most part, the team that should win will do so. Through the decades, we have seen some incredible teams take home the Lombardi Trophy. Here are the best Super Bowl teams from the 90s, 00s, and 10s.
1990s
1992 Dallas Cowboys, 16-3
When Jerry Jones looks in the mirror, he probably still sees the 1992 version of himself. That’s when he was the genius, hotshot owner whose team was the belle of the ball. These ‘92 Cowboys were everything and more. They featured one of the best offensive lines in NFL history, and their offense was not to be messed with. You couldn’t go wrong with Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, and Emmitt Smith. They won their playoff games by a combined score of 116-47. They had to get through a very good Steve Young led 49ers team and defeated them in the NFC Championship game, 30-20. Jimmy Johnson was at his peak in this game with Norv Turner running a fantastic offense. When it came to winning the Super Bowl, they had no issues taking down the Buffalo Bills 52-17. The Cowboys have since become a laughingstock over the years, but there was a reason that they were once, “America’s Team.’
2000s
2004 New England Patriots, 17-2
This team lacked a true star receiver. But they had Tom Brady, and this felt like the Super Bowl that Brady showed that he was no fluke and a force to be reckoned with. Brady and the Patriots were incredible this season. They won 14 regular season games. Both of their losses came on the road and one of them was to a 1-loss Steelers team that was also very good. Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel were two of the better coordinators that Bill Belichick had at his disposal during his tenure. This team had the fourth best offense and the second-best defense that season. They had multiple Hall of Famers on defense, and most importantly had Brady. The Pats took down a very good Andy Reid team in the Super Bowl, beating Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens in the Super Bowl, 24-21.
2010s
2016 New England Patriots, 17-2 Record
Everyone thinks that the 2007 Patriots team that didn’t win the Super Bowl as the best Pats team, but there was a lot to be said for the 2016 team. Nearly everyone will remember them for the 28-3 comeback win, but the reason it was so shocking that they were down big in that game was because they were so good during the regular season. Tom Brady would have been the MVP that season, but he missed four games to suspension due to “Deflate Gate.” The team was third in scoring and first in points allowed. Their defense allowing 28 points in the Super Bowl was shocking. They had blown past their opponents in the first two rounds but then made history trailing by 25 to the Falcons before Tom Brady turned nothing into magic and they made history with the greatest comeback in NFL history. This team lost just two games all season long and they weren’t going to lose a third in the Super Bowl.
