Best Super Bowl Team From the 60s, 70s, and 80s

We all have that great Super Bowl team in mind. It’s the squad that we remember dominating the league and winning the biggest game with ease. Some teams are just better than others, there is no way around that. Occasionally, a team of fate will come in and pull an upset, but for the most part, the team that should win will do so. Through the decades, we have seen some incredible teams take home the Lombardi Trophy. Here are the best Super Bowl teams from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

1960s

1966 Green Bay Packers, 14-2

The town that gets to truly claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy had the most dominant football team throughout much of the 1960s. The 1966 Packers team won both the NFL Championship and the first ever Super Bowl. They lost just two games all year and were as talented as any team in NFL History, featuring 11 future Hall of Famers. This team won the Super Bowl, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. They forced three turnovers en route to a dominant defensive performance. Bart Starr ran the best offense in the National Football League, and they blasted opponents. This team was so good that despite just winning nine total games the following season, they still won the Super Bowl.

1970s

1972 Miami Dolphins, 17-0

They stand all alone. The only team to ever pull off an undefeated regular season and win the Super Bowl. There is no denying the greatest-ness that was the 1972 Miami Dolphins. They had the league’s best offense and best defense. They employed eight future Hall of Famers, including quarterback Bob Griese, running back Larry Csonka, and head coach Don Shula. The Dolphins are maybe the greatest Super Bowl winning team of all-time. The Dolphins beat the Browns and the Steelers to make it to the big game. Then they had to take down the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl. No problem. Washington managed just one touchdown that was scored on special teams, but it was Miami’s defense that completely shut down the Redskins offense, holding them to 228 total yards of offense while grabbing three interceptions.

1980s

1985 Chicago Bears, 18-1

The greatest defense that ever lived. There was no getting past the 1985 Chicago Bears and their ruthless head coach Mike Ditka. The Bears featured seven future Hall of Famers, and it showed up in the box scores that season. Come playoff time, the Bears defense utterly dominated, shutting out the NY Giants 21-0 and the LA Rams 24-0. They then obliterated the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl 46-10. Chicago and its formidable defense forced six turnovers in that game, and it was pretty much over by the third quarter as Chicago led 30-3. They had the second-best offense and of course the best defense in the league, allowing an average of 12.4 points per game. Buddy Ryan would have liked to have been the head coach of this team, but he was still lifted onto his players’ shoulders to show what he meant to them.
