The All-Star break is approaching, and the Major League Baseball season has not disappointed thus far. Most of the usual superstars are performing as expected, and some new stars are developing. However, there’s also been some major disappointments. Here’s our 2025 National League midseason report.
The best of the best
The National League is absolutely stacked. Two of the three divisions have at least four teams that are over .400, which is pretty wild when you really think about it. We are setting up for a great wild card race and a few spectacular division races. The best team is the Dodgers…who would have guessed it. They are stacked and they are getting Shohei Ohtani back on the mound which makes them even more dangerous.
The Phillies are playing great baseball for another season, and they are led by a big offense. New York is hot on their tails, but the rest of the division isn’t as great. In the Central, the Cubs have improved from a wildly disappointing 2024 to prove that they still have what it takes to make a run at a divisional title.
The rest of ‘em
The NL West is my favorite division to watch as you have the Giants, Padres, and now the Diamondbacks that could all make runs in the wild card. The Dbacks are the least likely given their injuries, but in San Francisco, Buster Posey is proving that he will spare no costs to win after the Rafael Devers trade.
In the Central, The Brewers and Cardinals are right in the thick of the race and it will likely come down to which team will get major contributions from young players that they will need down the stretch.
What Happened?
The biggest what happened is being thrown at the Atlanta Braves who are 7 games under .500, can’t hit, can’t seem to pitch, and has a fan base that seems to be turning on Brian Snitker quicker than he won a World Series after he got the job.
Not as surprising are the Colorado Rockies. But any time a team might set the Major League Baseball record for worst record of all-time, you have to sit back and ask, “what happened?” the Rockies are pacing to lose well over 70 games before we even hit the All-Star break.
Bold Trade Prediction
My big bold prediction is that the Cubs are going all-in on making it to the World Series. That means they aren’t just acquiring one star player, but two star players. Eugenio Suarez and Emmanuel Clase are the two targets that they could dive all-in for.
I also don’t think the Giants are done quite yet. They made a big splash with Rafael Devers, but you don’t make just that move and then stay complacent. I think another bat could head to the Bay, like Jarren Duran or Cedric Mullins.
Playoff Prediction
- Dodgers
- Cubs
- Phillies
