The All-Star break is approaching, and the Major League Baseball season has not disappointed thus far. Most of the usual superstars are performing as expected, and some new stars are developing. However, there’s also been some major disappointments. Here’s our 2025 American League midseason report.
The best of the best
The American League is far weaker than the National League thus far in 2025. There is one division that has just one team over .500. One has just two teams over the .500 mark and the other employs three, but one is looking like they are getting ready to bow out.
When it comes to the best team in the American League, it’s the Detroit Tigers who happen to be tied as the best team in all of Major League Baseball with the Dodgers as of this writing. They have the best pitcher on the planet with Tarik Skubal and a bounty of young bats that have reenergized the city of Detroit as they rally around their baseball team.
The New York Yankees and Houston Astros are the other two powerhouses that you must watch out for. New York doesn’t have a tight lead in the AL East, and it is anyone’s division to win while the Astros seem to somehow always be good and are making the race in the West a whole lot less competitive as their young pitching turns heads.
The rest of ‘em
The Tampa Bay Rays have been really impressive. They gave away half their roster in the offseason but are still winning games despite playing in the Yankees Spring Training facility. The Blue Jays are also right on their tails as the Red Sox are trying to figure out if they want to wave the white flag or not.
There really isn’t anyone else in the Central to compliment, but the Seattle Mariners out West are still hoping they can stay in the division race. They find themselves six games back but will lean on one of the best pitching staffs in the bigs to get them back into it.
What Happened?
For me, there is no looking past the Baltimore Orioles. They have already fired their manager. Adley Rutschman has had major regression. They are likely to sell off half the team, tank again, and hope for another high draft pick next year. Baltimore is currently 11 games back in the East.
In the Central, I can’t believe how mediocre the Cleveland Guardians have been. Their offense is lackluster and if it wasn’t for Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan, it would just be downright bad.
Bold Trade Prediction
My prediction is that the New York Yankees don’t go down quietly. They will make a move for a bat like Bryan Reynolds and likely won’t stop there. Merrill Kelly is sure to be shopped around by the Diamondbacks and with Gerritt Cole out for the season, the Yankees would jump at getting another front-end guy to pair with Max Fried.
