The Basic Screwdriver

The Screwdriver has been a popular cocktail for decades. Some say the standard mix is one part vodka to two parts orange juice. That may be a bit strong. My advice is when you’re serving Screwdrivers at a tailgate, don’t only offer a pre-mixed pitcher of the cocktail. Offer a pitcher of plain orange juice so your guests have an option. If you can get your hands on some fresh orange juice, this is the perfect time to use it. —Beth Anthony

Serves: 8

2 oranges
16 ounces vodka, chilled
5 cups orange juice, chilled
2 cup crushed ice for serving

Wash oranges and slice into 1/4-inch rounds. In a large bowl, using a wooden spoon, muddle the orange slices, releasing the oil in the peel and the pulp from the rounds. Add the vodka, and mix. Then add the orange juice, and mix well.

Add crushed ice to 8 glasses. Pour in drink mixture, including orange rounds in each serving.
