Chicken wings and football go hand in hand, but why settle for serving just one flavor when you can turn game day into a friendly culinary competition? Invite friends to bring their best wing recipes and put their cooking skills to the test. From fiery sauces to sweet and savory glazes, a wing-off is a fun way to get everyone involved before kickoff. Just make sure to come hungry!

Establish the Rules

Every good competition needs a little structure. Decide how many contestants can participate, and how many wings each person should prepare. Will contestants cook on-site or bring their wings ready to serve? Establish those expectations ahead of time, along with any equipment requirements. Be sure to ask everyone to prepare enough wings for guests to sample each entry. After all, nobody wants to run out before judging begins.

Get Creative with Flavors and Sauces

This is where contestants can really spread their culinary wings. Encourage everyone to think beyond traditional Buffalo sauce and barbecue. Honey garlic, Korean-inspired gochujang, mango habanero and garlic Parmesan are just a few possibilities. Contestants can experiment with homemade sauces, dry rubs and unexpected flavor combinations to give their entries some personality. Consider introducing categories like Best Overall Flavor, Most Creative and Hottest Wing. (Just remember that not everyone enjoys a fiery challenge, so having a few milder options is a good idea.)

Choose the Right Cooking Method

The secret to a winning wing often starts with how it’s cooked. Grilling and smoking your wings can add a delicious char and smoky flavor, while baking and air-frying offer convenient alternatives for achieving crispy skin. Regardless of the method, patting wings dry before cooking can help improve their texture. Contestants should also have a plan for keeping batches warm until serving time. Most importantly, chicken wings must reach an internal temperature of 165°F to be safe to eat, so keep a meat thermometer handy.

Set up a Wing Tasting Station

With several recipes to sample, a little organization goes a long way. Arrange wings on numbered trays or platters so guests can easily identify each entry without knowing who prepared it. Provide small plates, plenty of napkins and wet wipes for those extra-saucy bites! Include classic accompaniments like celery and carrot sticks, ranch and blue cheese dressing to round out the spread. And keep extra dipping sauces nearby, along with a designated spot for used plates and trash.

Crown the Wing-Off Champion

Once everyone has had a chance to sample the entries, it’s time to determine a winner. Give guests ballots or tokens to vote for their favorites, using categories such as flavor, texture and creativity to guide their decisions. Along with an overall People’s Choice award, consider recognizing the Best Sauce or Hottest Wing. A small trophy, novelty apron or even a bottle of their favorite hot sauce makes a fun prize. But be prepared for the winner to defend their title at next week’s tailgate!
